Steve Hall

There’s plenty of ways you can engage with the Octopus team, and their responsiveness so far has been exemplary.

Having worked overseas for several years, Steve recently returned to the UK. Now semi-retired, he’s been able to split his time quite freely between work and leisure activities.

However, with the shift to retirement now underway, Steve knew he needed to reconsider his finances to make sure he was able to live comfortably. In particular, he decided it would be sensible to further diversify his portfolio. However, he wasn't completely sure of the best way to do this while still managing to get a decent return.

Steve spoke to his financial adviser, who suggested he take a look at Octopus Choice.

What made Octopus Choice stand out?

There were three main things that stood out to me about Octopus Choice:

  • I could ask at any time to get access to my money should I need it (although I'm aware instant access isn't guaranteed)
  • It could give me a competitive rate of return
  • It was a level of risk I was comfortable with

Of course, it’s important that any investment product you consider has the right balance between risk and return for you.

Then the fact that your money is invested in loans backed by bricks and mortar impressed me, too. It means that should a borrower be unable to repay their loan, the option to sell the asset is there.

All these attributes give me some comfort that I’ll see the returns I am expecting.

How has your experience been so far?

I’ve found it very easy to interact with the company. Whether it’s over the phone or by email, their responsiveness has so far been exemplary.

The values of the organisation, and how it behaves, is just what i’m looking for, too. And I really can’t say that about a lot of the financial sector.

Key risks to be aware of

Octopus Choice is not a cash savings account: the value of an investment and any income from it, can fall or rise. You may not get back the full amount you put in.

Peer-to-peer investments are not protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).

If a property needs to be sold, the amount recovered could be affected by a downturn in the property market. For the same reason, instant access cannot be guaranteed.
