Ruth Horton

Octopus Choice provides an easy way to target income in retirement, without having to take the volatility of investing in the stock market.

Ruth’s been retired for several years now. Having traded in the business suit to bring up the kids, they’ve now left for university, and she’s finally able to enjoy a bit of peace and quiet.

Financially, Ruth had taken a cautious approach to her retirement planning. Along with some investments in the equity markets through her pension, she’s kept a chunk of her retirement fund in cash, and has some capital tied-up in the family house.

However, last year, Ruth decided she wanted to start generating more of an income from her investments. The problem was, she wasn’t comfortable with the level of volatility involved in investing in the stock market.

Her financial adviser pointed her towards Octopus Choice.

Ruth, what initially attracted you to Octopus Choice?

After the recommendation of my financial adviser and my own research, I was very impressed with the Octopus Choice model. The conservative loan-to-values and diversification across numerous loans gave me a lot of confidence. And, considering this, you can earn an good return!

You say you're a fairly cautious investor. What was it that convinced you to invest in P2P rather than the stock market?

I have equity investments in my pension already, so investing in loans backed by property has given my overall portfolio better diversification.

The stock market is unpredictable in today's current market. So, until things settle down, I don't feel comfortable investing in it further.

Additionally at this stage I'm looking to target regular income with less volatility, which I believe property lending provides.

How has your experience been so far?

It’s been fantastic. I’ve been receiving my interest regularly, as expected. And I can ask for access to my money at any point (although I'm aware instant access isn't guaranteed).

I’ve also been really impressed with the communication from Octopus. There’s regular email updates on my investment, while you’re also easily able to get direct support when you need it. You’re made to feel special, with personal attention from someone on the team. It’s far superior to what I’ve experienced from the banks on the high-street.

Key risks to be aware of

Octopus Choice is not a cash savings account: the value of an investment and any income from it, can fall or rise. You may not get back the full amount you put in.

Peer-to-peer investments are not protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).

If a property needs to be sold, the amount recovered could be affected by a downturn in the property market. For the same reason, instant access cannot be guaranteed.
