Ruth Horton

Octopus Choice is an easy way to provide an income for me in retirement, without having to take the risk of investing in the stock market.

Ruth’s been retired for several years now. Having traded in the business suit to bring up the kids, they’ve now left for university, and she’s finally able to enjoy a bit of peace and quiet.

Financially, Ruth had taken a cautious approach to her retirement planning. Along with some investments in the equity markets through her pension, she’s kept a chunk of her retirement fund in cash, and has some capital tied-up in the family house.

However, last year, Ruth decided she wanted to start generating more of an income from her savings by putting them to work. The problem was, she wasn’t comfortable with the level of risk involved in investing in the stock market.

Her financial adviser pointed her towards Octopus Choice.

Ruth, what initially attracted you to Octopus Choice?

I don’t tend to like taking much risk with my money. But after the recommendation of my financial adviser and my own research, I was very impressed with the Octopus Choice model. The conservative loan-to-values and diversification across numerous loans gave me a lot of confidence. And, considering this, you can earn an exceptionally good return!

You say you’re a very cautious investor. What was it that convinced you to invest in P2P rather than the stock market?

I believe that lending to property developers is a much more stable investment than equities. The stock market is incredibly unpredictable, and in this climate looks like it’s only going in one direction.

I don’t think you can say the same about property. It feels like a much smaller risk to me. And, despite this, the interest rates aren’t much lower either.

How has your experience been so far?

It’s been fantastic. I’ve been receiving my interest regularly, as expected. And the relatively easy access to my money provides some good peace of mind.

I’ve also been really impressed with the communication from Octopus. There’s regular email updates on my investment, while you’re also easily able to get direct support when you need it. You’re made to feel special, with personal attention from someone on the team. It’s far superior to what I’ve experienced from the banks on the high-street.
